William S. Gordon

Private William Scott Gordon
June 1838 – December 13, 1864
Company E, 3rd New York Cavalry

Born in Delhi, Delaware County, New York, William Scott Gordon was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Scott) Gordon. He enlisted in the Union Army in August 1861, joining Company E of the 3rd New York Cavalry.

Private Gordon served his country for over three years during the Civil War. Sadly, he did not fall in battle but, like so many soldiers of the time, succumbed to disease—a common and deadly threat during the war. He died aboard a transport ship on December 13, 1864.

His quiet sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the hardships faced by countless soldiers who served not only on the battlefield, but in the long, harsh conditions of military life during the Civil War.
