Private William Creighton Stoutenburgh
December 21, 1841 – August 1, 1864
Company K, 40th New York Infantry Regiment

William Creighton Stoutenburgh, son of William and Caroline (Peake) Stoutenburgh, served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Private in Company K of the 40th New York Infantry Regiment.

He was wounded during the brutal and chaotic Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, which took place from May 5 to May 7, 1864. Though he survived his injuries for several weeks, he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. Multiple official records, including the 1865 census and a military document, confirm his date of death as August 1, 1864. Some sources list June 10, 1864, but there is no photographic or documentary evidence to support that date.

William is buried at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. A cenotaph in his honor stands in Woodland Cemetery in Delhi, New York, a tribute to his sacrifice and a reminder of the high cost of war.
