William Harry Hoyt Jr.
November 6, 1915 – January 9, 1943

William Harry Hoyt Jr. was born in Andes, Delaware County, on November 6, 1915, the son of William and Mary (Hitt) Hoyt. He graduated from Oneida public schools and went on to study pre-medicine at the University of Virginia. While in college, he worked with the radio station and took part in presenting dramas and pageants. Before the war, he was living in Tennessee.

During World War II, William served with the 320th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy. On January 9, 1943, he was lost at sea during a bombing and strafing mission in Papua New Guinea. He was aboard the B-24D Little Eva (#41-23772).

Although he never returned home, he is remembered with honor. His paternal grandmother was a resident of Delhi, and his sacrifice is part of the community’s legacy.
