James H. McDonald

Private James Hume McDonald
January 18, 1838 – December 17, 1862
8th Independent New York Battalion

Born in Stamford, Delaware County, New York, James Hume McDonald was the son of James and Elizabeth (Rose) McDonald. He enlisted to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War and was assigned to the 8th Independent New York Battalion.

Like so many soldiers of the era, Private McDonald faced not only the dangers of battle but also the ever-present threat of illness. He died of disease on December 17, 1862, in Yorktown, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

His death came during a time when disease claimed more lives than combat, a sobering reminder of the harsh conditions endured by Civil War soldiers. Private McDonald’s service and sacrifice are honored and remembered with gratitude.
