Harmance Hammond

Harmance Hammond
February 11, 1837 – June 10, 1862
Company H, 6th New Jersey Infantry Regiment

Harmance Hammond was the son of William and Maria Hammond. Though his birthplace is unconfirmed, he was living in Delhi, New York, at the time of the 1850 census.

He enlisted in the Union Army and served in Company H of the 6th New Jersey Infantry Regiment. There is a discrepancy in records regarding his rank—his gravestone lists him as a First Lieutenant, while official military records identify him as a Private.

Harmance died of disease on June 10, 1862, at White House Landing, a key Union supply port on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, located about 30 miles east of Richmond. Disease claimed many lives during the Civil War, often far from the battlefield.

His service and sacrifice are remembered as part of the larger story of the soldiers who gave their lives during the war—whether in combat or through the relentless hardships of military life.
